A little about me.
My name is Bek – I’m the creator and primary artist of 1:3! Based in Brisbane, Australia, I am a wife and a mum of two boys. Previously a self-employed bookkeeper by trade, I found that the impact of the high level of requirements for the work is taxing on both the mind and body. I started seeking a hobby to help me relax in my down-time (as little as that may currently be!) and 1:3 Art was born.
I began with pour painting when I saw a video of it being done online. The patterns are so random and have little to do with what I do to manipulate the paint. Each one is unique and can’t be replicated (Believe me, I’ve tried!) The process is quite relaxing as you wait with anticipation to see what patterns will arise. As a Christian, I was reminded of John 1:3: ‘Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.’ Therefore, I decided to call my new hobby ‘1:3 Art’ – we are made in His image and creativity is a large part of His character 🙂
Much as I loved the new craft I’d undertaken, I soon discovered that there was very little room in our small house to rest multiple paintings on perfectly level, dust-free surfaces for 4 weeks to dry and cure effectively! Also, the drips from the paintings were so pretty, I didn’t want to throw them away! I started researching methods for re-using these drips and that was when I discovered acrylic-poured (or fluid art) jewellery. I love the ability to capture a pour painting in a small frame that someone can wear – we call it ‘wearable art’. People love the unique nature, for themselves and as gifts – no-one else in the world has one exactly the same! It’s a much more personal gift as opposed to mass-produced jewellery.
As crafting hobbies do, I soon picked up another variation – wire-wrapped jewellery. Wire-wrapped jewellery has been really well-received by customers of a wide range of age groups (especially women) and is fairly new in Australia. Wire-wrapping gives me the ability to wrap semi-precious gemstones, including those that have sentimental value for my customers. Why have them sit in a draw if you can wear them close to your heart? They are also popular with nature-lovers and lovers of crystals. I have been creating wire-wrapped jewellery for years now and I love it. There is always something new to learn or develop.
I aim for a high level of quality and workmanship – handmade jewellery that will last the wearer long into the future. I love making beautiful things and I am honoured when other people want to wear my creations or buy them as gifts. Whether it’s for yourself or as a gift – I hope you enjoy the experience!
