Australian boulder opal occurs as thin seams and patches in host rock. As boulder opal covers only small areas, it’s impossible to cut as solid opal so it is cut to include the host rock, displaying the colour to its best advantage. The colour seen in opal is due to layers of silica spheres that form in a honeycomb arrangement, reflecting and refracting the light into different colours.
