Amethyst is a variety of quartz, characterised by its purple colour, which comes from naturally-irradiated iron in the stone. It has been used for over 2000 years in jewellery. It comes in faceted stones, cabochons, beads and tumbled stones. Its name comes from the Greek amethystos which basically translates into ‘not intoxicated’, because the ancient Greeks believed that wearing the stone or drinking from a cup made of amethyst would prevent its owner from getting drunk! It’s the birthstone of February.
