There are not many stones more unusual and striking than Australian boulder opal. Found primarily in Queensland, here in Australia, it is the second-most valuable opal variety after black opal. It is formed when silica from dissolved sand trickles into the cracks of ironstone boulders. Generally more durable than other types of opal, due to the fact that the stone is mainly host rock, it is desirable as jewellery. This gorgeous stone was sourced locally from a boulder opal miner and cutter.
