Labradorite is a member of the feldspar family, as are amazonite, rainbow moonstone and sunstone. The flash is called the ‘schiller effect’ (‘schiller’ is German for ‘shining’ or ‘twinkle’) and is caused by the light flashing off aligned plates in the stone at different angles.
